Flight Delayed or Cancelled with American Airlines?

American Airlines canceled flight compensation

The airline can cancel a flight for numerous reasons. If you do find yourself in such a situation, you might be worried. Under EU law EC 261, you could be eligible to claim compensation.

If American Airlines cancel your flight without any major reason, you could be entitled to claim compensation but the following condition must be met …

  • American Airlines informed you about flight cancellations less than 14 days prior to departure time
  • the reason behind the cancellation was within AA’s control
  • you had confirmed flight booking.

The amount of compensation is between 125€ and 600€ depending upon …

  • days you were informed before
  • the length of delay, and
  • route distance

For an American Airlines canceled flight without prior notice of at least 14 days, you have two options to choose from.

  • ask for an alternative flight

If your alternate flight or re-scheduled flight delays for more than 2 hours, you could be eligible for compensation under EU law.

Whereas, for American Airlines flight cancellation due to extraordinary circumstances, you are not eligible for compensation.

We at ClaimFlights make it easier to claim canceled flight compensation successfully without facing any difficulties.

How much can I claim for AA flight cancellations?

Am I eligible to claim compensation under extraordinary circumstances?
Extraordinary circumstances are events that can cause flight disruptions. These events are beyond the control of the airlines, such as bad weather, tsunami, or any ‘Act of God’. Thus, you are not eligible to claim.
Can I cancel my American Airlines flight and get a refund for the canceled flight?
If you want to cancel your reservations or change your flight date, the cancellation policy depends upon the type of ticket you have purchased as of the American Airlines Official Website. You can usually change or cancel your flight reservation online.

Within 24 hours or the same day of booking your ticket, you may cancel your trip and get a full refund of your ticket fee, subject to at least 2 days prior to flight schedule departure date. For a non-refundable ticket, there is no refund, unless and until American Airlines cancels their flight due to certain conditions such as Change in the schedule, Military Orders or Death of the Passenger/Co-Passengers.

American Airlines Missed Flight Connection

Well sometimes in order to reach the final destination passengers require connecting flights, i.e., the passenger has one or more layovers in between, and may have to change their flight to reach the final destination.

However, it is possible for the passenger to miss their connecting flight due to delay, or cancellation. In such a situation, the passenger could be eligible for compensation, if the entire journey was booked under one booking reference.

You may claim American Airlines missed connecting flight compensation under the European Union Regulation EC 261, if …

  • the same airline operates your connecting flight(s) which you missed due to a delay or cancellation of your first flight, and
  • the delay at the final destination is more than three hours.

American Airlines Overbooking Compensation

Overbooking is a situation in which an airline sells more tickets than there are seats on the plane. They are allowed to do this because they know passengers sometimes don’t show up at the airport.

This situation however actually puts the airlines at an advantage. They are allowed to bump passengers if the situation demands.

Under EU law, you could receive compensation up to 600€ for denied boarding due to overbooking, if the departure was from an EU airport.

Although you were offered an alternate flight or alternative transportation but reached later than three hours at the final destination, you are eligible for compensation.

Sometimes the airline also offers travel vouchers to the air passengers who were bumped.

What happens if you miss an American Airlines flight?
Don’t panic! American Airlines has a rule called ‘flat-tire’ rule that lets passengers put on a stand-by for a later flight to the destination with no penalty charge.

The rule will work if you missed your flight due to circumstances beyond your control and you need to be present at the airport within 2 hours of your missed flight.

Why do American Airlines overbook flights?
Airlines do not want to incur losses due to empty seats due to flight cancellations, delays or last-minute changes in travel plans. That’s why sometimes airlines sell more tickets on purpose, than the available seats on the plane.
